Warlords of Erehwon

Another new Fantasy rule set I purchased, the Warlords of Erehwon by Rick Priestley.  It is for "warband" size games of 5 to 12 units (5 to 10 figures each on average) or between 500 and 2000 points, which would translate to around 30 to 100 figures so smaller games than mass battle fantasy.

It looks very promising, and I have always enjoyed Rick Priestley's rules including: Black Powder, Hail Caesar, Warmaster, Warhammer Fantasy Battle (WFB) 3rd and 6th editions.  Warlords of Erehwon are well supported by Warlord games, the author and a Facebook group. Unlike certain other games is it not structured around army lists based on figures exclusively made by the publisher.  Plus the army lists are included with the rules, so no army books to buy.  Rick is adding new warband lists for online download plus the information is provided for players to create their own lists, for example the author sent me a guide on how to create a Dark Elf list (IMHO they should have been in the rules originally).  In addition to the rules and figures you will need d10, pin markers with numbers and Warlord Order dice as the rules do not use the traditional IGOUGO turn sequence.  The point system looks similar to WFB 3rd and 6th Edition so I can see these rules working with the Mighty Empires WFB campaign rules.

Here is a summary of the rules from the Warlord of Erehown rules from the  publisher.

Warlords of Erehwon is a fantasy based game designed for 28mm tabletop warfare. The gameplay is built around the D10 system developed for the science-fiction game Beyond the Gates of Antares and also using the praised order dice mechanic first used in the Bolt Action WW2 rules.

The Warlords of Erehwon game rules allow us to fight battles between fantasy warriors, mighty sorcerers and ghastly monsters. A force is imagined to number anywhere from twenty or thirty models to about fifty or sixty. This is not a ‘mass battle’ game requiring hundreds of models and a vast tabletop, nor is it a skirmish game for just a handful of models on each side. The scope of our game lies somewhat between – and we call these forces warbands.
Warlord of Erehwon is designed with many races in mind, here they are:

  • Barbarians
  • Beastman
  • Dwarf
  • Elven
  • Gnoll War Party
  • Goblin
  • Halfing
  • Knightly Retinue
  • Olympian
  • Orc
  • Undead
  • Monsters

Army size

Warbands or armies can be between 500 to 2000 points.  To see how many figures you would get in a typical 1,500 point list I created a roster for the Undead, that consisted of 10 units, a champion and a General (Liche) totaling 72 figures. I also drew up two lists for the more expensive High Elves which had 41 and 56 figures.  The number of figures could be higher if for example for the undead aI replaced small units like carrion, stone thrower and chariot with 10 figure skeleton units, resulting in around 96 figures, and over a 100 if the champion was replaced with 5 Wights.

 Order Dice

The Warlord Order Dice (originally for Bolt Action) are expensive, 12 dice $33 Cnd, although I have seen them for $26 Cnd on eBay.  A DIY solution to save money on those expensive command dice:
