Kings of War Campaign

Update April 22, 2020 Fantasy Map Campaign Idea- Online

March 30, 2020: Since we can't get together due to the physical isolation required by the Covid-19 virus outbreak. It seems like a good time to resurrect my idea from February 27, 2017 for a Kings of War (KoW) campaign but now as an online Fantasy campaign using either: KoW, Warhammer Fantasy Battle (WFB)  Mighty Empires,  SAGA Age of Magic (AoM) or Hordes of the Things (HOTT) rule systems.

All of four of the rules systems above have campaign systems for their fantasy worlds, but some work would be needed to make them work for an online campaign.  There are PDFs for the WFB Mighty Empires and KoW campaign rules available online but for SAGA AoM and HOTT the campaign rules are in the actual hard copy rule books only as far as I am aware, but there may be PDFs available online somewhere.

The first challenge would be creating the map, I do have paper tiles from Mighty Empires I have downloaded that can be used to create a map.  There is also the KoW campaign map below  for  "The Winter's Flood" designed for a Mantic campaign in 2017 that could potentially be used if I added some grid references.

The WFB Mighty Empires system is the more developed rule system having been around since 1990 and the full original version is 64 pages.  This version and shorter ones can be found online, and I have a hard copy and PDF of the 64 page version and the shorter ones.  The longer version is likely the best as it will have more detail on the board game / campaign aspect as we won't be able to play the actual miniature battles generated by the campaign. The rules have a system for determining the outcomes of the battles without a miniatures game.  Here is a link to the 64 page PDF.

There are also the maps with grid numbers we developed for the KoW campaign idea back in February 2017 below - "Bloody Fields".  I have the PDF of the KoW campaign rules that are only 6 pages long that includes a resolution system for battles that cannot be fought on the table with miniatures. Note these KoW rules are designed for V.2 of the rules not the new V.3 version, although this may not matter as figures will not be involved, although we would need to determine which rules to use for generating armies.

We won't need the link as I have the PDF of the KoW campaign rules that are only 6 pages long and includes a resolution system for battles that cannot be fought on the table with miniatures.

Update April 21, 2020

I found some very useful links using the Mighty Empires rules as a basis for a Kings of War campaign.  See:

Update June 11, 2020

I will continue this discussion under the title SAGA campaign as the discussion has gravitated to using those rules.

It could be worth trying, especially to give John and Ted an opportunity to game. However, it may be best to wait until after the other GM's campaign will have gotten underway.

It will depend on what the other players wish to do and how long the virus situation lasts. So far Ted has declined and you wish a delay. Waiting on John and Bernhard, possibly one other.

Looks like Ted will join us. I can see an advantage in waiting a little while until the other campaign is underway to see how certain rules questions are resolved. I would like to see if there is an online campaign system for SAGA AoM as it would have the additional advantage of being able to be switched back to include miniature games once the virus crisis is over.

IIRC, the version of KoW that we had tried was such that whichever unit first got a charge in had a huge advantage - are the rules still like that?

While there were some improvements in KoWIII (2019) they unfortunately did not change the mechanics that favoured the charging unit. It is integral to the combat system so the simple solution of allowing the defender to strike back causes problems. I have been thinking of ways to improve on it by making the charge movement (double move) variable. For example rolling a d3 when a foot unit charges and adding that amount of movement to the charging units movement, perhaps a d6 or average dice for cavalry. Another option would be rolling a d6 with 1-2 = -1", 3-4 as written, 5-6 = +1" (double the amount for cavalry). This will hopefully end the gamey tactic of stopping half an inch outside an enemies charge range.

As I said at the start of this blog, I am open to other rule systems such as SAGA AoM or Shadowstorm for example or even WFB.
