SAGA Age of Magic: Undead versus Iroquois: Halloween theme game, October 2020.

Apologies for being a bit late in posting this Halloween SAGA Age of Magic (AoM) game report.   This was a second match up between these two opponents: the Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse (Undead board) versus an Iroquois war band (Lords of the Wild board) fought on October 12, 2020 using SAGA AoM rules. I added some Halloween scenery as appropriate for October.  This was a basic encounter scenario with the objective of killing the other sides warlord.

The Zombies provide cover for the Horsemen as they advance.

The Zombies main roll would be to garrison wooded areas to prevent ambushes by the Iroquois archers.

The Iroquois

Iroquois War band  (Lords of the Wild Board):

1 x Warlord                                                                                      0 points

4 x Warrior bow units = 32 figures, 4 units of: 10,10,8, 4               4 points

A Griffin (Reaper metal sculpt)  that somehow joined the Iroquois. Perhaps it is half Eagle and half Cougar rather than Lion.

Turn 1:

Both sides move to towards the centre

The undead move forward towards thee centre while the archers move to cover the flank on the hill

Skeleton archers move on to the hill, while the undead army advances forward in the centre

The Iroquois move behind and around the Pumpkin patch and into the woods.

Zombies, lots and lots of zombies in the centre.

The Undead come under fire from Iroquois archers in the woods and take some fatigue and hits.

The Zombie Daron attacks the Iroquois on the flank but only inflicts minor damage killing a couple of arches and takes some fatigues in the process.

Turn 2

A huge Tree Man emerges from the swamp and attacks the Zombie Dragon.

The Zombie Dragon is slai,  this was likely the turning point in the game

The tree man has taken some fatigue but as he is a temporary result of a SAGA ability so the fatigue was not important.

An attack by the Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse against some of the Iroqouis Hearthguard is repulsed with casualties.

The Skeleton spear armed warriors suffer heavy casualties at the hands of Iroquois Hearthguard and are forced back.

The Skeleton Archers continue to fire on the Iroquois bowmen in the woods with little effect.

Turn 3

The conflict comes down to a final battle with the remaining Undead horsemen of the Apocalypse trying to kill the Griffin to try to prevent a total defeat.

The Horsemen fail to kill the Griffin, only inflicting fatigues on it and are destroyed themselves in the battle.  The intervention of the surviving skeleton spear armed skeleton warrior  makes no difference. The Undead were decisively defeated.

Conclusion

It was good to get a game in after a long enforced pandemic hiatus in gaming, plus re-familiarize ourselves with the rules and get some newly painted figures on the board.  The day did not go well for the undead, the zombies proved to be useless as the Iroquois never launched any ambushes from the woods and the points spent on them would have been better spend on a Necromancer or more spear armed warriors. The Iroquois did a good job in using the woods as cover.   It was not a good match up for the Undead versus the Lords of the Wild, the Undead were the paper and the Iroquois the scissors in a game of Rock, Paper, Scissors.

Hmm, the 2 points of "paper" zombies might have helped against a melee "stone," and might have helped to screen against archery, yet would not seem to have had much to screen for very long. And, once the advance bypassed them, what use were they? Do zombies even generate SAGA dice?

Zombies / mindless hoard don't generate SAGA dice but they do provide good cover and can be a good blocking force. However not for archers as you can't shoot through / over friendly units unless on a different elevation. They also move very slowly and need SAGA dice to move so the trick it to start them in the correct spot, easier said than done. I was planning to use them as garrisons in woods to prevent any ambushes that the Lords of the Wild can spring.
